What is the difference between ordinary fireplaces and gas fireplaces

As the name suggests, ventless gas fireplaces do not require any provision of vents in the house when installed. These fireplaces run on propane or natural gas and use the existing air in the room to aid the combustion process – therefore the need for no vents.
Vis-à-vis traditional fireplaces, ventless gas fireplaces have several advantages. With an efficiency rate of over 90%, they are considered to be the most energy efficient heating solution. There are no hassles of cleaning up soot and ash. While traditional fireplaces consume a large amount of wood and coal, all a ventless gas fireplace needs is gas and air. Also, building a stone fireplace can prove to be quite expensive. Ventless fireplaces are easy to install and require practically no modifications to the house as they do not require any ducts or chimneys. They can also be fitted in any nook or corner of the house as they do not occupy too much space in the house. And above all these, they also score well in the aesthetics department. The market has several attractive designs in varied sizes and shapes for all budgets.
However, there are a few things to check before going for a vent less fireplace. Since these fireplaces do not require any vent and draw air from the existing room, there is a threat of an increase in carbon mono-oxide in the room. The American Gas Association has ensured that all ventless gas fireplaces come with oxygen depletion sensors that will constantly measure if there are approved levels of oxygen in the room. If at any time, these sensors get an indication of low levels of oxygen, they will automatically switch off the gas fireplace. Also, most ventless gas fireplaces are provided with burners concealed under the gas logs to provide sufficient air for efficient combustion of natural gas without producing too much of carbon monoxide.
