Difference between Outdoor and Indoor Fireplaces

The moment you hear the word “fireplace,” chances are you would picture a room with an exquisitely designed square-shaped hole in the wall where wood crackles and burns while the smoke and fumes are drawn upwards and out of the room through a chimney. While this is undoubtedly correct, this does not encompass the variety of different fireplaces that are available in local home depot stores and over the Internet. In fact, fireplaces can be grouped into two main categories: outdoor and indoor fireplaces.
Indoor fireplaces, as already mentioned, are the more popular amongst the two. These types of fireplaces are commonly used during the cold winter months to provide warmth to the entire home. They are commonly made out of marble, stone, and wrought iron. Indoor fireplaces are often equipped with a chimney to ensure that the air quality circulating around the entire home contains very minimal carbon monoxide and smoke that is emitted by the burning of the coal and the wood inside the fireplace. Traditional indoor fireplaces use coal and wood as fuel for the fire to provide warmth throughout the entire house.
On the other hand, outdoor fireplaces are commonly used during the summer nights. They are not used during the winter months since the snow and the sleet have been known to cause damage to the outdoor fireplace, making it no longer usable. Outdoor fireplaces are generally fueled with wood. Because these are used outdoors, most outdoor fireplaces are made out of clay or iron, and generally do not have any chimney chutes. Instead, the smoke is allowed to escape through vents that are found underneath the outdoor fireplace. Because of this, outdoor fireplaces tend to have grills or pitched chimneys attached to them. This is to prevent the embers from escaping from the fireplace because of the wind, which can become a potential fire risk.
