Cleaning a Fireplace

From the safety point of view, cleaning a fireplace is very important. On a regular basis fireplace should be cleaned as this is good for health and hygiene as well. The ideal time to clean the fireplace is in the warm summer months. Taking care of fireplace should be done carefully as this may sometimes cause fire hazards.
Procedure to clean the fireplace:
- To clean the fireplace, let the ashes cool initially.
- The large debris should be removed from the fireplace manually and put in a trash can. This has to be done manually as this will not fit in a vacuum cleaner.
- Using a vacuum cleaner, remove the ashes out of the fireplace. In this case, professional help will be better than vacuuming it at home.
- The carpeting near the fireplace should be covered with a tarp. A newspaper should be put on the top of the tarp, at the fireside and inside the fireplace.
- A gallon of water should be mixed with a cup of bleach. The soot and creosote inside the fireplace should be cleaned with the help of a scrub brush and the water bleach solution. For removing dirt which is particularly stubborn, a wire brush scrub should be used.
- The newspapers should be thrown and the excess should water should be wiped with old rags.
- The floor should be cleaned with the water-bleach solution and the excess water should be mopped up with hand towels.
- Next step would be to clean grates. For this, layers of newspapers should be put on the clean surface. The fireplace grates should be placed on the newspapers. These grates should be cleaned with bleach water or oven cleaner.
- The fireplace doors should be cleaned by using glass cleaner spray and newspapers.
- The firebox should be cleaned either with water-bleach solution or by using other cleaning solutions such as washing solution, vinegar etc.
